Understanding Home Insulation Materials

Fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool, and foam are some insulation materials installed at home to reduce heat transfer. But all of them are different quality-wise. So, let’s find out the most common home insulation materials types and how they differ.

Types of Home Insulation Materials

  • Fiberglass
  • Cellulose
  • Foam

Now, let’s briefly discuss them one by one.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is the home insulation material that takes the lead in the insulation industry. How? People prefer buying it because the utility is not heavy on the pockets and is easy to install. The insulation resource is commonly used in other types of insulation, such as blanket versions of batts and rolls, rigid boards, duct insulation, and loose-fill.

Fibreglass is accommodated in floors, attics, unfinished walls, and ceilings.

Cellulose

In the home insulation materials, cellulose takes up the second position. This is made of recycled paper and has high recycled material content. Manufacturers sometimes use borate to make cellulose to prevent your house from getting engulfed in a fire and to be safe from pest invasion. This type of insulation can be found in both old and new homes in the shape of full-blown or loose-fill in enclosed walls or to open cavities in new walls. The material is often seen in unfinished attic floors.

If the house is newly constructed, the cellulose can be installed dry behind netting or damp-sprayed.

Spray Foam

Foam board or rigid foam is a versatile material that you can use to insulate virtually any part of your home, from the foundation to the walls. Why? The price of the resource does not give you second thoughts before buying as it’s that reasonable, and remember to touch the installation part that foam is super easy to attach. The ones who are fond of creating DIY things make foam out of rigid foam board while revamping the house.

It is further divided into two types: injection and spray foam. Injection foam is added to already present walls with cavities. Spray foam, on the other hand, is used in its liquid state, which, when applied in attics, rim joists, and pole barns, expands accordingly to come into effect.
